Standard 3.6: Selecting & Evaluating Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. (PSC 3.6/ISTE 3f)
Artifact: Podcast 101 Assignment
Reflection:
This artifact is an introductory assignment to demonstrate educational use of podcasts. It is a recording of my first podcast to discuss beginner level skills in adopting podcasts for communicating with students in various academic settings. The podcast was selected for this assignment to demonstrate digital tools and resources for English Language Learners and students with special needs. It is an application that allows students to consume and produce content related communication about assignments.
Standard 3.6 Selecting and evaluating digital resources is established in this artifact by selecting podcasts and evaluating podcasts as a digital resource. Podcast is used to demonstrate suitability and compatibility with the technology infrastructure at Hopewell Middle school. This artifact discussed how students may use podcasts to collaborate through online podcast channels. This artifact also discussed how I would like to introduce podcasts to my students in a content related assignment and for assignments. By publishing and recording y first podcast recording, I discussed how I would like to use it to communicate with diverse learners who are auditory learners. Through classroom discussion posts, I collaborated with fellow learners to select and evaluate different ways to use podcasts in various academic content areas; for example, homework series podcast channel for announcing homework to students. We accomplished this by exploring some real podcast channels for academic purposes. This artifact meets our school’s criteria for accuracy, suitability and compatibility in using available Information and Communication Technology (ICT) that are opensource for teachers to maintain ongoing communication with students and parents.
What I learned by completing this artifact is that podcasts open an entirely new world of communication with parents and students. It is another option for keeping parents and students informed, while making sure that it is suitable for technical infrastructure of a school. Some of the suitable infrastructure are regular devices such as laptops, ipads and wifi access. What I would have done differently is create a podcast channel and try it out with my students. It would have been great to collaborate with students using podcast. In addition, co-pan with students to get their voice and insights for how they would like our class to use podcasts for learning experiences.
This artifact impacted school improvement by contributing to digital options or communicating with students, parents and he community. It may be assessed by further applying current infrastructure in our school and analyzing the compatibility of podcast channels and suitability with available hardware and software. Student learning style may also be assessed and podcasts used to identify how their learning styles are accommodated for communicating academic content. Student exposure to content related podcast channels and their responsiveness to podcast learning activities will also serve as a way to assess this artifact.
