Reflection
The “Tools that Make a Difference” blog activity was an assignment that required blogging about digital tools that I would consider particularly relevant for specific instructional practices. The assignment also demonstrates how I would manage digital tools and resources in the context of student learning experiences. In this assignment, 3 tools were explored: Planboard (Digital Lesson Plan organizer); Present.me (Presentation platform); and Boomwriter (Website that helps students organize their writing). These tools were explored as to how they impact student learning and how they may be managed within the context of student learning experiences.
Standard 3.2 is established as this artifact demonstrates how I managed digital resources to impact student learning experiences. By using Planboard.com, I collaborated with middle school teachers to organize lesson plans and upload student learning resources in one electronic location for ease of teacher access when distributing to students. Boomwriter is an electronic platform that also improves student learning experiences by helping students organize their writing by ideas and topics. Present.me is a presentation tool that students used for making presentations about an idea or topic that they researched and documented in writing. To manage present.me as a presentation tool, I set clear objectives and expectations so that students will not digress from the context of learning assignments. By managing these 3 digital tools and resources in a learning environment, I was able to complete a blogging assignment that demonstrates how fellow teachers may manage the above tools and resources in the context of student learning experiences.
As an English teacher of students with learning disabilities, I learned how important it is to teach “Predictions” as a critical thinking skill. the voting option in Boomwriter website keeps students motivated and engaged with class literature as it allows them to assume the role of an author through participation. I learned about the anonymous publishing option as a relevant tool for students who struggle with anxiety in publishing their work to share their work anonymously without feeling called out on a public platform. What I learned during this activity is that it there is an overwhelming amount of digital tools available to teachers. However, they are very similar in many ways and how we manage them in a learning environment is up to us as instructional experts. If I were to do one thing differently, I would explore another digital lesson plan organizer.
This artifact may be assessed by student ability to stay on task and engaged during learning activities designed with the tools. It may also be assessed by teachers’ ability to manage the 3 digital resources in an instructional setting. Setting clear expectation and objectives will guide the teacher to assess the impact of these tools within the context of learning. This may occur during class observations, teacher-student feedback and student performance on the content expectations, while using the digital tools to demonstrate learning objective(s).
