Standard 3.5: Basic Troubleshooting
Candidates troubleshoot basic software and hardware problems common in digital learning environments. (PSC 3.5/ISTE 3e)
Artifact - "I am Thankful" Video
Reflection
“I am Thankful” video is an artifact assignment that was assigned during the thanksgiving season. The assignment required creating an original video that demonstrated use of digital photos to create a video and insert another video. It was to be completed on any topic of interest. I chose to create a video about what I am thankful for and demonstrate my use of hardware and software tools to edit and troubleshoot video editing during the assignment completion. The digital pictures and videos included family, friends and experiences that I am thankful to have.
Standard 3.5 Basic Troubleshooting is established in this artifact as I identified which hardware and software would be appropriate for completing the task. Then I applied basic troubleshooting skills to edit the video for background noise and produce a video with only background music. This video artifact also demonstrates troubleshooting skills for digital storytelling with music and captions by aligning specific actions in pictures and videos with the lyrics of the background music to tell a story. For instance, when the lyric goes “I hope you dance”, I appropriately timed the “I am Thankful” video and inserted a video where people were dancing. I also applied basic troubleshooting skills by resolving issues related to stabilizing the inserted video for optimal viewing experience. This artifact is a 3-minute video but took several days to complete due to repeated efforts to upload to various platforms and configuration such as MP3 and MP 4. With basic troubleshooting efforts, the video was compiled and uploaded to several platforms and formats.
I learned during this artifact assignment, that just like our students, learning experiences should be personally relevant to us. This creates authentic learning opportunities for students to demonstrate academic mastery, while they uphold what is of personal interest to them. Therefore, students can demonstrate mastery when they have a personal interest in the academic topic. What I would do different in this video is to attempt to complete it with a different movie making app to see how the same video will be produces on 2 different apps.
To assess this artifact, a rubric will be used to evaluate specific troubleshooting skills demonstrated in the final product of the video. Such troubleshooting skills will identify consistencies with timing of specific details and editing background noise in secondary video as embedded. This artifact may also be assessed by students’ ability to demonstrate use of similar digital tools for learning assignments that are personally relevant. By applying specific skills to produce digital content, students will also demonstrate mastery of academic content.
