Standard 2.6: Instructional Design
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of research-based best practices in instructional design when designing and developing digital tools, resources, and technology-enhanced learning experiences. (PSC 2.6/ISTE 2f)
Artifact: Multimedia Design (OneNote Webquest)
Reflection
This WebQuest artifact was designed and developed to promote a technology enhanced learning experience for middle and high school students who would be using a Learning Management System called OneNote for their 1:1 device personalized Learning Initiative. Students will watch 3 training videos, 2 of which are interactive videos. Then, they will practice creating their own digital notebooks. They will go on to complete a research project on a subject, create a video reflection about the process, evaluate themselves and present their research using digital resources such as a presentation platform of their choosing, for example, Power point, Videos, or sway. As a technology enhanced learning experience, students will use at least 3 digital tools and resources as they complete this artifact. Student will also produce digital content using various digital resources.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard because it maximizes digital resources such as the 1:1 student devices. By modeling and facilitating best practices for technology enhanced student learning experiences on the 1:1 devices, students apply research-based best practices to produce digital notebooks that demonstrate ethical use of digital resources; in addition, demonstrate mastery in navigating a Content Management System. A rubric was provided by the teacher to guide students as self-directed learners during the experience. By designing and developing step by step guidelines with digital resources in the form of videos, students also took ownership for their own leaning.
I learned during this artifact that as an Instructional Technology Specialist, it is necessary to support teachers in developing content related ways of designing technology enhanced learning experiences for all students. It is also important to mention that I have learned to maximize digital tools by incorporating them into instructional practices without compromising content standards. Although these are all important strategies to bear in mind, I have also learned that step by step guide with various tutorial formats (visuals, audio, etc.) ensure that more learners are able to apply best practices in using digital resources. What I would likely do differently is use this same approach to model best practices for incorporating technology with teacher. Therefore, it will serve as a professional development for other teachers.
The work that went into this artifact may be assessed by evaluating the individual digital notebooks of the students. It may also be evaluated by observing classroom practices of teachers who used the webquest with their students. Their ability to apply the artifact and encourage students to produce their own digital notebooks in various content areas will also assess the artifact.
